Quick answer: Interior budget = the sum of each item (kitchen, wardrobes, furniture, electrical and the rest) plus a contingency, usually around 10%. Left to spend = budget − spent so far. The default list of ₹ 8,00,000 becomes a ₹ 8,80,000 budget with 10% contingency.

How do you use the interior budget calculator?

  1. Enter what you plan to spend on the kitchen, wardrobes, furniture and electrical work. Other items, the contingency and your carpet area are under “Adjust other items and contingency”.
  2. As the work goes on, enter what you have spent so far to see what is left.
  3. Enter the cash you have set aside for interiors, if you like, to see whether the plan fits it.

How should you build an interior budget?

Build it item by item. A single rate per sq ft is handy for a first guess, and the interior cost calculator does that, but adding a rate per sq ft to a list of items counts the same work twice. Here every rupee sits against one item, plus a contingency for the extras that turn up once work starts: a plug point moved, a wall repaired, an extra shelf. Then track spending against the plan, so you can see early if one item is running over and trim another.

Worked example: the default plan

Kitchen ₹ 2,00,000, wardrobes ₹ 1,50,000, furniture ₹ 1,50,000, electrical ₹ 75,000, false ceiling ₹ 75,000, flooring ₹ 50,000 and appliances ₹ 1,00,000 add up to ₹ 8,00,000. With 10% contingency the budget is ₹ 8,80,000. The kitchen is the largest item at 25% of the list. These amounts are placeholders.

Worked example: halfway through

On the same plan, with ₹ 3,50,000 spent and ₹ 8,00,000 set aside, ₹ 5,30,000 is left to spend, and the budget is ₹ 80,000 more than the cash available. For a 1,100 sq ft carpet area the plan works out to ₹ 800 per sq ft.

How can you keep interiors on budget?

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the size of the home and what you want done. List each item you need, add a contingency for surprises, and compare the total with the cash you have. The default list on this page comes to ₹ 8,80,000 with 10% contingency, but the amounts are placeholders.

A rate per sq ft already covers the kitchen, wardrobes and other work. Adding it to an item list counts the same work twice and inflates the budget. Use one method; this page uses the item list, and the interior cost calculator gives a quick per sq ft figure.

The calculator uses 10% by default. Older homes, layout changes and electrical or plumbing work usually need more, because problems show up only once walls are opened. A simple fit-out in a new flat may need less, as long as the design is fixed before work begins.

Enter the total you have paid so far in “spent so far” after each payment. The calculator shows how much of the budget is used and what is left. If you go over, it shows by how much, so you can trim another item before it is too late.

In many homes it is the kitchen or the wardrobes, but it depends on your choices. The calculator shows which of your items takes the largest share, so you know where a change in material or design will save the most.

Ask each vendor whether the quote includes GST and enter the amount you will actually pay. Furniture, fittings and labour may be billed separately, sometimes at different rates, so check each invoice line. Indicative only.
