How do you use the modular kitchen calculator?

  1. Measure the length of the base cabinets along the walls in feet. For an L or U shape, add up each side. This is the running length most quotes use.
  2. Enter the cabinet rate per running ft from your quote, the countertop rate per sq ft, and lump sums for accessories and appliances.
  3. Read the total. Countertop depth, GST and contingency are under “Adjust depth, GST and contingency”.

How is a modular kitchen priced?

Most designers quote cabinets per running foot of kitchen length. That rate already reflects the board, shutter finish and whether wall units are included, so ask what it covers. The countertop is priced per sq ft of top, which is the length times the depth, usually around 2 ft. Accessories such as baskets, tall units and soft-close hinges, and appliances such as a hob, chimney and sink, are often quoted separately.

Worked example: 10 running ft

At a placeholder ₹ 12,000 per running ft, cabinets cost ₹ 1,20,000. A 10 × 2 ft countertop is 20 sq ft; at ₹ 1,000 per sq ft that is ₹ 20,000. Add ₹ 50,000 of accessories, ₹ 10,000 for installation and ₹ 1,00,000 of appliances. With 5% contingency the kitchen comes to ₹ 3,15,000, or ₹ 21,000 per running ft before appliances.

Worked example: a 16 ft U-shaped kitchen

A U shape with sides of 5, 6 and 5 ft is 16 running ft. At the same rates it comes to ₹ 4,09,500, with a 32 sq ft countertop costing ₹ 32,000.

What should you ask for in a kitchen quote?

Multiply the running length by the cabinet rate, add the countertop at length × depth × rate per sq ft, then accessories, installation and appliances. A 10 ft kitchen at placeholder rates comes to ₹ 3,15,000 with 5% contingency. Replace the defaults with your own quotes.

It is the length of the kitchen measured along the base cabinets. For an L-shaped or U-shaped kitchen, add the length of each side. Designers price cabinets per running foot, so measuring it yourself helps you check a quote and compare two designers fairly.

Multiply the running length by the depth of the top. The calculator uses 2 ft by default, which you can change under Adjust. Add any extra pieces, such as a breakfast counter or a backsplash in the same stone, as a lump sum under accessories.

It depends on the designer. Some quote base and wall units together per running foot, others price wall units separately. Ask what the rate covers, including the board, shutter finish and hardware, and enter a rate that matches it. Comparing rates only works when they cover the same things.

Site conditions often bring small extras: plumbing or electrical changes, wall repairs or an extra accessory. The calculator adds 5% by default so the budget has some room. Raise it if your walls, plumbing or wiring need work before the units go in.
