Quick answer: Flooring cost = floor area × (1 + wastage) × material price + floor area × laying rate + skirting length × skirting rate. Skirting length is the perimeter less doorways. A 20 × 10 ft room at placeholder rates of ₹ 100, ₹ 30 and ₹ 40 comes to ₹ 30,280.

How do you use the flooring cost calculator?

  1. Enter the room length and width in feet.
  2. Enter the material price and the laying charge per sq ft from your quotes, and the skirting rate per running foot.
  3. Enter the number of doorways. Skirting is worked out from the room perimeter, so you do not have to measure it.
  4. Read the total and the material to buy. Wastage, doorway width and other work such as levelling are under “Adjust wastage, doorways and extras”.

How is flooring cost worked out?

You pay for the material you buy, which is more than the floor area because pieces are cut at walls, corners and doorways. Laying is usually charged on the floor area itself. Skirting runs along the walls, so its length is the room perimeter, less the width of each doorway. Anything else, such as removing an old floor, levelling or special adhesive, is added as a lump sum.

The calculator works for tiles, stone, wood, laminate or vinyl alike, because each is priced per sq ft. For tiles sold in boxes, the tile calculator rounds up to whole boxes.

Worked example: 20 × 10 ft room

The floor is 200 sq ft. With 10% wastage you buy 220 sq ft; at a placeholder ₹ 100 per sq ft that is ₹ 22,000. Laying at ₹ 30 per sq ft adds ₹ 6,000. The perimeter is 60 ft; less one 3 ft doorway, 57 ft of skirting at ₹ 40 a foot is ₹ 2,280. The total is ₹ 30,280, or ₹ 151 per sq ft.

Worked example: 12 × 11 ft bedroom

With material at ₹ 250 per sq ft, 8% wastage and laying at ₹ 40, a 12 × 11 ft bedroom with one doorway comes to ₹ 42,640: ₹ 35,640 of material, ₹ 5,280 for laying and ₹ 1,720 for 43 ft of skirting.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the floor area by the material price after adding wastage, then add laying on the floor area and skirting on the perimeter. A 20 × 10 ft room at placeholder rates of ₹ 100 material, ₹ 30 laying and ₹ 40 skirting comes to ₹ 30,280. Use your own quotes.

The calculator adds 10% by default for cutting at walls, corners and doorways. Diagonal or patterned layouts, small rooms with many corners and natural stone usually need more. Ask your contractor for an allowance that suits the layout you have chosen.

Skirting runs round the walls, so start with the perimeter: twice the length plus the width. Subtract the width of each doorway, because skirting stops at the door frame. The calculator uses 3 ft per doorway by default; change it under Adjust if your doors are wider.

Laying is usually charged on the floor area actually covered, not the extra material bought for wastage. Some contractors quote laying and material together per sq ft; if so, enter the combined rate as the material price and set laying to zero.

Yes. Each is priced per sq ft, so enter its price and the laying or fitting charge. Wooden and laminate floors may need an underlay, and some vinyl needs a levelled base; add those under other work if they are quoted separately.

Enter the prices you are quoted, and ask whether they include GST, transport and unloading. Material and labour may be billed separately, sometimes at different GST rates, so check each line of the bill. Indicative only.
