If you're buying a home on the strength of a metro line, the line's stage matters more than its colour. A running station and an announced one can look the same on a brochure map, but they aren't worth the same. This guide puts every line on one page, with sources, as of 19 Oct 2026.
Which Bengaluru metro lines are running in 2026?
Three lines run today.
| Line | Route | Length and stations | Running since |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purple | Whitefield (Kadugodi) to Challaghatta | 43.49 km, 37 stations | Full line 9 Oct 2023 |
| Green | Madavara to Silk Institute | 33.5 km, 31 stations | Madavara extension 7 Nov 2024 |
| Yellow | RV Road (Ragigudda) to Bommasandra | Over 19 km, 16 stations | 10 Aug 2025 |
The Yellow Line opened on 10 Aug 2025 (PIB), and by August 2026 its 15th train had brought peak-hour gaps down to 6 minutes (The Hindu, news). The Green Line figures come from The News Minute's report of the Madavara opening (news). The whole network is about 96.10 km (The Hindu, 13 Oct 2026, news).
Which metro lines are under construction?
| Line and stretch | Length | Where it stands (Oct 2026) | Target, and whose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pink, elevated: Kalena Agrahara–Tavarekere | 7.5 km, 6 stations | CMRS inspected 6–8 Oct and listed 36 observations; BMRCL filed compliance 15 Oct | No official date. BMRCL aimed for "around Dasara"; a TV channel reported an early-November inauguration (news) |
| Pink, underground: Dairy Circle–Nagawara | about 13.8 km | Trial run targeted before end-2026 (news) | May 2027, per BMRCL's MD as reported; another report said March 2027 (news) |
| Blue, Silk Board–KR Puram (outer ring road) | Part of 58.19 km | Trials targeted from November 2026 (news) | May 2027 per BMRCL as reported; "mid-2027" per the minister (news) |
| Blue, Hebbal–airport | Part of 58.19 km | Work beyond Yelahanka reported lagging (news) | September 2027, per the minister (news) |
| Blue, KR Puram–Hebbal | Part of 58.19 km | Under construction | December 2027 to March 2028, per the minister (news) |
The official progress figure for the whole Blue Line is 72.50% physical and 70.17% financial at 30 June 2026, from the Housing and Urban Affairs ministry's answer in the Lok Sabha on 6 Aug 2026 (Lok Sabha Q.3087). That answer gives no completion date. It says metro projects generally take five to six years from sanction, depending on land, tree permissions and court cases.
Earlier Pink Line targets of mid-August and mid-October 2026 were missed (News18, news). Treat every date in this table as a target.
Which metro lines are only approved or proposed?
| Line | What's planned | Stage |
|---|---|---|
| Orange (Phase 3) | JP Nagar 4th Phase–Kempapura along the western outer ring road, 32.15 km, 22 stations; Hosahalli–Kadabagere along Magadi Road, 12.50 km, 9 stations | Approved by the Union Cabinet on 16 Aug 2024 at ₹15,611 crore, with a 2029 target (PIB). Foundation stone laid August 2025. BMRCL invited general consultancy bids in October 2026 (The Hindu, news) |
| Red (Phase 3A) | Sarjapura–Hebbal, 37.804 km, 27 stations | BMRCL project report February 2026; awaiting central approval; soil testing started (news). Deccan Herald reported it may open only by 2033 (news) |
Our Phase 3 route guide covers the Orange Line corridors area by area.
How should homebuyers read a metro line's stage?
The 5-rung metro ladder (our framework)
| Rung | What has happened | How much weight to give it |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Proposed | A project report exists | None in your price. It can change route or stall |
| 2. Approved | Centre and state have sanctioned it and fixed a cost | Low. Construction may not have started |
| 3. Under construction | Civil work on the ground, with progress reported | Some. Ask how far your stretch has got |
| 4. Safety cleared | The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has authorised passenger service | High. Opening is close |
| 5. Running | Trains carry passengers | Full. Now judge the walk and the frequency |
On this ladder, the Red Line is on rung 1, the Orange Line on rung 2 moving to 3, the Blue Line and the Pink underground on rung 3, and the Pink elevated stretch between 3 and 4. Only Purple, Green and Yellow are on rung 5.
Worked examples
Worked example 1: what waiting for a line costs you
Illustrative. You buy a ₹1 crore flat with an ₹80 lakh loan over 20 years at an assumed 8.5%. The EMI is about ₹69,426 a month. Here's what you'll have paid before a line near you opens:
| Line you're counting on | Rough wait from Oct 2026 | EMIs paid before it opens |
|---|---|---|
| Pink underground (May 2027 target) | about 0.5 years | about ₹4,16,555 |
| Blue, KR Puram–Hebbal (up to March 2028) | about 1.5 years | about ₹12,49,665 |
| Red Line (2033, as reported) | about 7 years | about ₹58,31,772 |
The longer the wait, the more of your payments go in before the metro helps you. Run your own numbers on the EMI calculator.
Worked example 2: why the walk matters
Illustrative, at a walking speed of 5 km/h.
| Distance to station | One-way walk | Extra walking per month vs 800 m (22 workdays, two ways) |
|---|---|---|
| 800 m | 9.6 minutes | none |
| 2 km | 24 minutes | about 10.6 hours |
A station 2 km away costs you about 10 extra hours a month on foot. At that distance, many people take a bus or an auto to the station instead, which changes the maths again.
Worked example 3: how targets have slipped
| Line | Earlier target | Latest target | Slip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue, full line | December 2027 | March 2028 | 3 months |
| Pink, elevated | Mid-August 2026, then mid-October 2026 | No official date | 2+ months and counting |
| Red Line | Earlier deadline | Pushed back by two years (Deccan Herald) | 2 years |

- [ ] Noise and construction disruption near the alignment considered
- [ ] Any "metro-facing" claim in a brochure checked against BMRCL's route
- [ ] Title and approvals checked by a lawyer as usual (our legal checks guide)

Frequently asked questions
Three: the Purple Line (Whitefield to Challaghatta), the Green Line (Madavara to Silk Institute) and the Yellow Line (RV Road to Bommasandra, opened August 2025). Together they cover about 96.10 km, as reported in October 2026. The Pink Line's elevated stretch is next in line.
There's no official date. The 7.5 km elevated stretch from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere was inspected on 6–8 Oct 2026, and BMRCL replied to 36 observations on 15 Oct. Reports point to late October or November. The underground stretch to Nagawara is targeted for 2027.
The Blue Line's Hebbal–airport stretch is targeted for September 2027 and the full 58.19 km line for March 2028, per the minister as reported in October 2026. Officially, the line was 72.50% built at 30 June 2026, and the government hasn't given a completion date.
Phase 3, the Orange Line, is two elevated corridors approved in August 2024: JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura along the western outer ring road (32.15 km), and Hosahalli to Kadabagere along Magadi Road (12.50 km). The approval set a 2029 target; BMRCL invited consultancy bids in October 2026.
It's the proposed Sarjapura–Hebbal line, 37.804 km with 27 stations, from BMRCL's February 2026 project report. It awaits central approval. BMRCL has started soil testing on Sarjapur Road, and Deccan Herald reported it may open only by 2033.
Only for what you can verify. Check the line's stage on our 5-rung ladder, the status of your stretch, and the real walk to the station. A line years from opening shouldn't carry much weight in your price, and your plan should still work if it's late.
It depends on you, but the walk adds up. At 5 km/h, 800 m is under 10 minutes and 2 km is 24 minutes, about 10 extra hours a month for a daily commuter. Time the real route, including crossings and footpaths, not the straight-line distance.
BMRCL announces openings, and the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety authorises passenger service. For progress, answers in Parliament give official figures, such as the Blue Line's 72.50% at 30 June 2026. News reports carry targets; treat them as targets.
