Steel Estimation Insights
  • ℹ️ Consumption Rate: Using a steel rate of 100 kg/m³ across 2.83 m³ concrete produces a base steel weight of 283.2 kg.
  • ℹ️ Wastage & Tonnage: Adding 5.0% wastage (+14.2 kg) results in 297.3 kg (0.30 Metric Tonnes) total requirement.

Verify Bar Bending Schedule (BBS): Preliminary estimates using kg/m³ or kg/sq.ft provide quick budgeting figures. For site ordering, always obtain the structural engineer's detailed Bar Bending Schedule (BBS) specifying bar diameters, cut lengths, overlaps, and hook bends.
This calculator provides an indicative estimate based on the construction volume or area, steel consumption rate, wastage and other inputs provided. Actual reinforcement requirements depend on structural design, loads, spans, detailing, bar bending schedules and project specifications. For structural work, always follow the approved structural drawings and engineer's specifications.

How to Calculate Steel Quantity

Estimating steel reinforcement involves determining concrete volume or built-up area, applying a steel consumption rate, and adding a cutting wastage buffer.

Step 1
Calculate Concrete Volume
Multiply Length × Width × Thickness to get concrete volume in cubic metres (or built-up area in sq.ft).
Step 2
Apply Consumption Rate
Multiply volume by the structural consumption rate (e.g. 100 kg/m³ for slabs/beams, 3.5 to 4.5 kg/sq.ft for built-up area).
Step 3
Add Cutting Wastage
Add 5% to 10% wastage for cutting losses, lap splices, and hook bends.
Step 4
Convert to Tonnes
Divide final weight in kilograms by 1,000 to convert to metric tonnes for supplier ordering.

How to Calculate Steel Bar Weight (D²/162)

Unit weight per metre of round steel rebar is calculated using the formula Weight (kg/m) = D² / 162, where D is the diameter in millimetres.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much steel is required for 1 cu.m. of concrete?

Standard residential RCC construction uses approximately 80 to 120 kg of steel per cubic metre of concrete depending on structural load.

How do you calculate the weight of a steel rebar?

Steel rebar weight is calculated using the formula Weight (kg/m) = D²/162, where D is the bar diameter in millimetres.

What is the weight of a 12mm steel bar per metre?

A 12mm TMT steel bar weighs approximately 0.889 kg per metre (12² / 162 = 0.8889 kg/m).
